Planet Gridlock: Wanted: Congestion Relief
In this article, the author provides a list of some of the most heavily congested areas in the world based on the area's infamy as well as anecdotal evidence. The cities include: Sao Paolo (Brazil), Lagos (Nigeria), Baghdad (Iraq), Beijing (China), Bangkok (Thailand), Dublin (Ireland), Los Angeles (U.S.), Paris France), London (UK) and Dhaka (Bangladesh). The article offers examples of the congestion severity and ensuing impacts. Sao Paolo's traffic congestion is bad enough to cost $80 billion in loss annually and to encourage what has become the highest per capita helicopter ownership in the developing world, while Bangkok has resorted to imposing a duty of up to 300 percent on new vehicles. Los Angeles has been rated the worst in congestion in the U.S. for the eighteenth consecutive year, and Dhaka has been faced with the challenge of congestion for a city that has tripled its size in the last 25 years
