Key Strategies to Building, Retaining Transit Ridership
This article gives an overview of a recent Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) study focusing on how a transit provider can increase ridership through service frequency, fare restructuring and collection, marketing, and local partnerships. These observations are based off of a survey of 100 different transit providers that vary in various types and sizes. The first step in any improvement, as the study notes, is naturally that of an identification of where a particular organization can improve; one tool for this is conducting a demographic survey. The adjusting of operations and services is beneficial in that it improves passenger satisfaction if implemented properly. Local partnerships are helpful in that they both attract demographic segments that may otherwise not use public transportation as well as opening up parking spaces. Marketing is critical as many individuals may not be aware of the services provided, and fare collection is important to ensure that streamlining the payment process and thereby boosting on-time performance.
