Re-Engineering Extends the Life of Britain’s HST Fleet
Britain's High Speed Train (HST) fleet is 25 years old and in need of refurbishing. This article describes the proposal by one company to fit the trains with new engines in a bid to extend their lives by another 10 years. Planned replacement of these trains is not due until 2015. The trains consist of a power car at each end, with eight or nine trailer coaches in between. The author describes how owner of many power cars, Angel Trains, is currently testing a modern engine in two power cars with a view to re-engineering the entire fleet to ensure its reliability for the next 10 years. The engines are being assessed for reliability, fuel consumption, exhaust emissions, vibration, and noise levels. One sidebar summarizes the changes to European Union emissions rules that will come into effect in the next five years.
