SOME INTERNATIONAL ASPECTS OF ROAD SAFETY INVOLVING THE NATO COMMUNITY

This paper introduces an international approach to the issue of road safety. Members nations of NATO are participating in an international program addressing road safety including such topics as alcohol and driving, advanced vehicle inspection, road hazard identification and accident investigations. It is hoped that by working together on common road safety issues, the technological resources of many countries can be exchanged and used for the mutual benefit of all. This international cooperative effort could produce improved vehicle safety standards and performance, a better understanding of the causes of collisions, an improved working relationship between governments and industry aimed toward the goal of fewer driver and passenger fatalities and a general decline in collision statistics.
