Soil Conditioning Under London
This article summarizes the use of soil conditioning treatments such as foams, polymer solutions, or a combination of products, when using earth pressure balance machines (EPBMs) to excavate large diameter tunnels. The author uses data presented from soil conditioning research undertaken on C220, which includes 7.5-kilometer twin-bore tunnels excavated between late 2002 and early 2004 from Stratford Box to St. Pancras station in Central London. The author describes the varying makeup of the soil encountered in the project, and the importance of rigorous control of the ground movement. Twenty-eight bridges, the North London Flood Relief Sewer and four railway tunnels lay above the project. The author describes the type of equipment used, the amount of soil conditioning treatment, and the behavior of the EPBM in relation to these soil conditioning treatments.
