A review of large-scale test slabs reinforced with synthetic macro fibres

Synthetic macro fibres are increasingly being used in concrete applications, particularly ground-supported floors and pavements. A study that measured and compared the structural response of plain and synthetic fibre-reinforced concrete slabs under monotonic loading is reviewed. The synthetic macro fibre used in the test programme was STRUX 90/40 from Grace Construction Products. The main components are polypropylene and polyethylene. Monotonic testing was carried out on 2.2 x 2.2 m slabs with a thickness of 127mm. Vertical deflections, internal bending strains and the applied force were measured. Reinforced or plain slabs were centre-loaded or edge-loaded. The addition of synthetic macro fibres modified the failure behaviour of plain concrete slabs. Flexural strength was increased by fibre reinforcement, but the tensile capacity of the concrete slabs was unaffected.
