A50 Trentham Lakes

A project to improve access from the A50 to the Trentham Lakes development on the east side of Stoke-on-Trent, UK is described. The scheme includes new slip roads, a new bridge over the A50, new traffic signals and some road realignment. The construction process is being conducted under a design-and-build contract by Edmund Nuttall. A key part of the scheme is a new 35m-long bridge over the A50. The composite steel and concrete bridge deck is continuous from one abutment to the other. Thermal deck movements are accommodated by the soil interacting with the piles supporting the abutments. Therefore there are no bearings. All formwork (MkII Soldiers, DU-AL beam wall formwork system, Multiform Bridge Parapet Bracket) for the in-situ concrete abutment walls was supplied by SGB Formwork. The bridge was lifted into place using a 900-tonne crane.
