Determining Important Carrier Attributes: A Fresh Perspective Using the Theory of Reasoned Action

This research studies carrier selection criteria from three perspectives: 1) increased emphasis on reducing transportation costs; 2) increased need for carrier preparedness in case of unforeseen circumstances; and, 3) increased emphasis on supply chain security. The authors use the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) model, which was proposed by Fishbein and Ajzen in 1975, for predicting shippers? intentions for purchasing transportation services from carriers having certain characteristics. The model is used to determine if shippers intend to purchase transportation service from carriers who possess specific valued attributes. The model delineates the attributes that have been deemed most important to the transportation purchaser. It also is used to determine those attributes that are perceived to be the most important to others in the shipping organization. The results are used to help guide carriers in improving operational and promotional performance.
