Labour Costs and the Decline of the MZA Railway in Spain, 1912-1935

The operating labor costs at the Spanish railway company Madrid Zaragoza & Alicante Railway (MZA) during 1913-1935 is studied. This article attempts to answer the question of the effect of the increase of labor costs had on MZA before the Spanish Civil War. The author concludes that the decline of railway companies cannot just be attributed to labor costs. While the operations of MZA would have improved with a policy of wage moderation and lower welfare expenses, it does not appear that it would have provided long-term survival of the company.
