VISUAL INCONVENIENCE CAUSED BY TRAFFIC

VISUELE HINDER VAN VERKEER

This article describes an investigation of the influence of roads and traffic on the appraisal of the image of residential streets. The appraisal has been quantified and a connection between visual judgement and some objective, measurable, environmental factors has been found. The average assessment of ten pictures of residential streets proved to be described by a predictor used in England by the Department of the Environment. It was not possible to find a connection between the assessments and some social characteristics. A considerable part of the variation in assessments remains unexplained. /TRRL/
