Analysis of Regenerative Braking Energy Capture and Usage on a Diesel Locomotive Hauled Train
This paper looks at a conceptual design used to accomplish the energy recycling on a passive individual railcar. It explains how the energy savings generated on one railcar can be expanded to an entire consist. However, the focus here is to look at only one railcar to simplify the cost benefit comparison. A host of questions come to mind when analyzing the feasibility of such a system such as: what is the design configuration? What components are to be used? How does the system get started and operate? Can I eliminate the current emergency battery energy storage on the passenger car? Can I retrofit the system during overhaul? How much does it cost? How much does it save? What are the reliability and maintenance requirements? When is it available? This analysis attempts to answer some of these questions based on real world components and practical considerations.
