Charting the Final Chapter in Germany's Rail Reform
This article reports on the current status of Deutsche Bahn AG, the German railroad, which is being prepared for a complete transition to private-sector ownership. After beating its own financial targets in 2005, it is now a mega transport business. Though still state-owned, management hopes to shift at least some of the business into the private sector. The firm has grown mainly through acquisitions, which has drawn criticism that it is becoming an unwieldy conglomerate. A public debate has centered over the benefits of retaining some of the company under state ownership versus going completely private. The Chairman of the Management Board has argued for the former, and it seems that leading politicians agree. It remains up to the parliament to decide which path to take. The article includes charts showing financial performance.
