TransitChoice - A New Vision for Greater Detroit
This document describes TransitChoice, a new personal public transit system designed to serve the Greater Detroit (Southeast Michigan) area. The objectives of the new system include delivering a more frequent. reliable, and cost-effective service with shorter waits and better connections. The document describes what the new system will look like, featuring tiers of service, responsive local service options as well as fixed-route service, community and regional transfer centers, and automatic vehicle location (AVL) technology. It examines the reasons as to why a new system is needed, the associated costs and funding, and what is involved in the implementation and operation of the service. Also included are a vision statement and an implementation strategy involving pilot programs, the consolidation of transit functions, a proposed organizational structure with a merged administration, as well as vehicle maintenance options. The document concludes with a discussion regarding legislative and regulatory issues associated with the TransitChoice system.
