Crossing Continents

This article examines the poor state of roads in South America and describes a number of projects that are scheduled to improve not only roadways, but growing congestion and poor safety standards. The author begins with projects in Brazil, including 106 projects in Rio Grande do Sul state alone scheduled to be completed before 2015. He describes a controversial project--the BR163 highway linking Cuiaba in Mato Grosso state to Santarem in northern Para state. In Chile, along with its strong economy has come increasing traffic volumes. The country already has one of the world's most sophisticated tollroads and is planning several more. The author also describes projects in Guatemala, Mexico, Costa Rica, Bolivia, and Argentina. The article includes a short sidebar on construction in tropical areas.
