Efficient Deployment of Advanced Public Transportation Systems - Phase 2: EDAPTS: A Smart Transit System for Small Transit Agencies

This report presents a study of the impact of cost reductions versus performance tradeoffs for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) solutions in small and rural transit environments. It demonstrates how ITS can be tailored to meet the needs of smaller agencies at a lower cost. Low cost designs and their impacts on transit agency operations are described. These concepts are then evaluated in a live field test in a small transit market. The Efficient Deployment of Advanced Public Transportation Systems (EDAPTS) Smart Transit system is an open-source Transportation Management System (TMS) designed to be low cost, easily configurable to local needs, and non-proprietary to aid small, medium, and rural transit properties in achieving ITS benefits. EDAPTS is currently operation in San Luis Obispo, California, and uses on-board mobile data terminals connected to dispatch via wireless data links, remotely controlled electronic message signs at bus stops, and central dispatch and server software.
