Major boost for Norwich public transport
The opening of a new central bus station marks the completion of the latest phase of the Norwich Public Transport Major (PTM) scheme in the UK. The scheme includes bus priority measures, a new interchange at the railway station, improved facilities and information for passengers, and ticket vending machines in the bus station, railway station, on-street interchanges, the university and hospital. The background to the Norwich PTM is outlined and details are given of project funding. Norfolk County Council's strategic partnership with Mott MacDonald and May Gurney has been a key element in the delivery of the Norwich PTM scheme. The principal innovations of the scheme relate to the geometry of the bus lanes and contraflow layouts and phasing of traffic and pedestrian signs.
