DRIVER APPROACH BEHAVIOUR AT SIX SIGNALIZED RAILROAD CROSSINGS
The behaviour of drivers of buses, delivery vans, light and heavy lorries at level crossings was investigated. Observed variables included: driving speed at different distances from the crossing, speed variations, acceleration or speed reduction, driving direction and age and sex of driver. During the intervals in which the signals were flashing, dangerous unpredicted behaviour was recorded, including disregard for the signals, vehicle skidding and zig-zag driving between closed barriers. Dangerous situations and blind panic occurred during every alarm period. Based on these results a modified warning system is recommended which lessens the uncertainty of decision and increases faith in the signals. /TRRL/
