Refurbishment on a roll

The growth of the train refurbishment industry in the UK is outlined. This article describes the refurbishment of Great North Eastern Railway Mk4 coaches by Bombardier at Wakefield, the refurbishment of 110 Porterbrook-owned Mk 3 vehicles for 'one' Anglia at Litchurch Lane, Derby, the refurbishment of GNER high speed trains, the refurbishment of Class 455 fleets for South West Trains and Southern, the refurbishment of Angel Trains' Class 317s operated by 'one', the refurbishment by Bombardier Derby of HSBC-owned Class 315s operating out of Liverpool Street, and the refurbishment of Chiltern's fleet of Class 165 Networker Turbo DMUs at Bombardier's Ilford factory. The practice of refreshing stock at train operating company depots is increasing. This is illustrated by the installation of air conditioning in ScotRail's Class 158s and the refurbishment of Mk 3 vehicles used on the Caledonian Sleeper services, both in Inverness. The London Underground District Line D78 stock is being refurbished at the Bombardier Derby works and the entire Docklands Light Railway fleet is being refurbished at Alstom's Wolverton works.
