A cleaner solution

New EU air quality directives have led to city authorities in Germany insisting that certain set concentrations of ultra-small PM10 particles (fine dust) must not be exceeded on more than 35 days per year. This could result in buses and coaches not fitted with particulate traps being banned from urban areas. One solution might be to fit the PM-KAT continuously self-regenerating trap being installed by MAN on its Euro-4 compliant D20 bus engines. Another possibility is to use CRTec closed-loop particulate filters. MAN has selected exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) as the means for its buses and coaches to meet Euro 5 and Euro 4. To achieve Euro 5 with EGR, MAN will use a PM-KAT trap and will opt for two-stage turbocharging with inter- and after-cooling. MAN buses powered by hydrogen are in service at Munich Airport and are operated by BVG, Berlin's transport authority. MAN has also been involved in the development of a diesel-electric bus and there are now over 2,500 buses with MAN compressed natural gas engines in operation. MAN is also developing a number of packages aimed at improving driver and passenger safety. These include Lane Guard and adaptive cruise control.
