Fitting the after-market options to CAN vehicles
The advent of controller area network (CAN)-enabled microcontrollers has simplified vehicle loom wiring to control non-critical dashboard and body electrics. It is possible to link such equipment on a common twisted-pair CAN bus instead of dedicated loom wiring. This represents a cost saving for vehicle manufacturers but poses a new problem for the after market suppliers, such as NCS Systems. NCS Systems developed the SpeedM8 system to address the problem of electronic speedometer conversion and delimiting of vehicles imported from Japan. This product was threatened by the prevalence of CAN-controlled speedometers. NCS Systems and Bridgwater Electronics jointly developed a range of solutions based on a single low-cost module centred on the dsPIC30F4012 device. Details are given of the hardware, ease of installation, software and future developments.
