Sweet news for winter maintenance
This article reports briefly a new de-icing product piloted in the UK in the 2004/2005 winter maintenance season. The material Thawrox Plus, from manufacturer The De-icing Business, includes rock salt and about three per cent of a derivative of molasses from sugar production. The additive was primarily designed to improve efficiency by reducing wastage and spread rates, but also provides a substantial reduction in equipment corrosion. The sugar additive binds in the salt fines, which reduces bounce-off, wind-borne loss and blocking in the spreading equipment.
