Living with the CEN code

This article gives an overview of the CEN code, BSEN13201, a British and European standard covering design and performance of road lighting. This comes in four parts: selection of lighting classes, performance requirements, calculation of performance, and methods of measuring lighting performance. Important alterations to the previous standard concern grid spacing and grid arrangements. In some cases lighting levels have changed, and uniformity requirements have become more important. The author points out that notes in the standard are often equally important to the main text. There are sections on lighting class selection for differing road types, with additional classes determined from a reference class. Maintenance factors are also included.
