Britain's new look rolling stock

This article presents an overview of the new rolling stock types deployed on the UK railway network since privatisation in 1996. Journey times have been reduced and the number of services offered has increased. A number of train operating companies have completely renewed their fleets, moving away from locomotive-hauled trains to a unit-based fleet, such as Virgin Trains' renewal of its Cross Country fleet with Voyager trains from Bombardier and Pendolino tilting trains from Alstom. Midland Mainline has introduced Meridian diesel electric units. Turbostar diesel trains from Bombardier have proved popular. Franchise operators around London have invested heavily in new trains to replace 'slam door' stock. Southern and South East train franchises have chosen Bombardier's Electrostar trains.
