Going green: innovations in recycling [asphalt]
This paper describes the efforts by one organization to push the current boundaries for use of recycled materials in asphalt through an extensive and on-going research and development program. One of the disappointing aspects of the project has been that the attitude of engineers in road agencies towards recycled materials does always not match the rhetoric expressed in their own organizational policies. The research and development program has involved two major phases and a number of separate projects. The first phase commenced in 1999 with an initial focus on increasing the usage of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in hot mix asphalt as well as expanding the potential for cold recycled asphalt products. The second phase commenced in 2002 with an investigation of the use of waste foundry sand in asphalt. This was further expanded in 2004 with the inclusion of crushed glass and crushed concrete materials as potential replacement for aggregates in asphalt.
