Street sweeping: best practice?

Street sweeping is a multi million dollar business, with an estimated $4.4 million dollars invested in plant equipment, operational and disposal costs annually in metropolitan Adelaide alone. But why do we sweep streets? There is conflicting scientific evidence and debate on the benefits of street sweeping, and its contribution to environmental values. Add to this confusion the current directions in urban design which increasingly result in more compact roadways, tighter corners, and less efficiency in street sweeping, and it is fair to ask -just what is street sweeping best practice? This paper explores the requirements for street sweeping "best practice" as developed in the Patawalonga and Torrens Catchment Water Management Board's Street Sweeping Technical Review and Best Practice Plan for metropolitan Adelaide. The paper also reviews research which has considered the performance of street sweeping as a water quality improvement tool and discusses the environ mental, economic and amenity roles of street sweeping and considers other options available.
