Louisiana Cable-Stayed Bridge Span to Be North America's Longest
In order to boost economic growth in a rural area of Louisiana, transportation officials have commissioned a cable-stayed bridge that will cross the Mississippi and link two parishes in the state. The cost of the bridge, which will be named the John James Audubon Bridge, is estimated to be $347 million, It is being funded by the Transportation Infrastructure Model for Economic Development. The main span will be 1,583 feet, making it the longest cable-stayed bridge span in North America. The new bridge will replace ferry service. The bridge features two H-shaped pylons, a design chosen for its cost-effectiveness and practicality. Each pylon will support 68 stay cables. The article describes other design and construction features in detail.
