Globalization and Policies/Politics towards Sustainable Development in Developing Countries

The chapter interrelationships between regional and global economic integration on the one hand, and the emergence of environmental and resource-oriented policies in developing countries, on the other hand are discussed in this chapter. The chapter discusses the notions and processes of sustainable development, globalization, and institutions, including their interrelations. Three types of agents are identified: economic agents (national and transnational corporations), political bodies (national governments and supranational development organizations), and civil-society organizations (in particular, non-governmental organizations). Global has had a positive effect on national environmental policies in developing countries (especially the creation of environmental institutions), but its impact has also been negative (related to the erosion of national governments’ authority). The chapter explores the possibilities to overcome this drawback by constituting a “countervailing power,” focusing on the economic, political, and environmental realities faced by African countries. The chapter concludes that civil society may play an important role to fill the environmental governance void in developing countries, but it will not provide a panacea.
