Improving Rail's Competitive Position to Serve the Belgian Ports

Belgian ports are the target of several investments in rail systems designed to make rail more competitive in freight movement from them. The port of Antwerpen, which accounts for around 40% of all freight moving on the country's rail network, is of special interest. Projects totaling nearly 1.2 billion Euros are scheduled over the next six years. Container traffic is a big source of potential growth for rail carriers. Today, rail accounts for some eight percent of container traffic, but it is expected to at least double and perhaps reach as much as 20% in the near future. Another area of attention is the left bank of the River Schelde, where around 84 km of new track has been laid. The Liefkenshoef line will provide a new rail freight connection. Another potential new connection is the Rhine connection between Antwerpen and the Ruhr. Additional Belgian ports are scheduled to receive rail investments as well. The article includes map of the port of Antwerpen and schematics of rail routes.
