New Interchange Connects Two Arizona Freeways

This article describes a complicated and massive interchange project designed to keep traffic moving smoothly in Tucson, Arizona, for the next 15 years. Known as the Crossing, the structure is an interstate-to-interstate traffic interchange built on three levels. The project required the demolition of nine old bridges, and the construction of 10 new bridges, eight new ramps connecting the interchanges, as well as the reconstruction of a city street, while keeping interstate traffic moving on two lanes in each direction. The article describes the safety challenges that were involved, as well as innovative techniques that were employed, including the use machinery that cut a week from the demolition schedule of each bridge. The author also discusses environmental considerations, which included the discovery of a prehistoric settlement in the area.
