Grand designs
This paper describes the views of designers from four companies on tyre design. The design team from Michelin concentrate on promoting the main characteristics of the tyre: the brand, the quality, tread pattern and safety. Both the human hand and computer programs, e.g. CATIA, are used in the design process. Automotive company Vredestein turned to a design house, Giorgetto Giugiaro, for assistance in styling tyres. Aesthetics are important for Vredestein, whose market is solely replacement tyres. Goodyear uses finite element analyses to predict the structural forces likely to be experienced in tyre service, followed by experimental validation. Tyre models include Pacejka, Ftire, CDTire, SWIFT-tyre and Rmod-K. At Bridgestone Firestone, the first step in new design is to look at customer requirements and the basic timeline. This is followed by modelling to determine the pattern direction, mould shape, construction and materials. The aesthetics of the tyre are decided early in the process.
