Pre-series Avanto starts test running

The first of 15 dual-system Avanto low-floor light rail vehicles (LRVs) ordered by French National Railways in 2002 is under trial at the Siemens test centre in Wegberg-Wildenrath. The vehicles will run on the Aulnay-Bondy line through the eastern suburbs of Paris. The LRVs are the first tram-train vehicles to be equipped for operation at 25 kv 50 Hz as well as 750 V DC. Siemens developed the concept and subcontracted the production of many of the major parts. The vehicles are being assembled by Lohr Industrie in France, with parts supplied by Scharfenberg, Hubner and Thermo King. The vehicle is the first genuinely low-floor tram-train and the first multi-articulated tram-train. A test run is discussed with reference to noise levels and ride quality.
