Rebuilding bridges

Freyssinet has worked on various bridge rebuilding projects in Kosovo since 2000. Its first job was the rebuilding of the Mitrovica Bridge connecting the two halves of Mitrovica between Serbia and Kosovo. The rebuilding project was funded by the French Development Agency. The challenges associated with rebuilding the bridge effectively in a military zone are outlined. Labourers from both sides of the town were used. The bridge was designed to have overlooks where locals can gather to chat. Succeeding contracts include contracts to demolish and rebuild small concrete structures and a larger contract at Rakovina where two bridges over a railway line and river were rebuilt using precast units. The lack of materials except concrete meant that the company had to import most of their materials. Construction of the Kacanik Bridge on the road between Pristina and Skopje in Macedonia is underway. The bridge consists of six spans. The deck will be built in two stages, the central section first, followed by cantilevers on each side.
