CroBIT provides a European data platform

The demand for international freight movement in Europe is increasing, except in the rail mode. A key element is rail's failure to invest in advanced information technology. The development of an international information platform would allow all parties in cross-border rail freight operations to share data. The EU is funding the development of the CroBIT (Cross-Border Information Technology) project by a consortium including UIC, railway IT departments, the Fraunhofer Institute and software companies. Data provision is represented by different product elements: connectivity, visibility, alert management and reporting. With these elements, shippers could contract to provide 'door-to-door' monitoring of individual consignments. The vision for CroBIT is to automate all data input, using train status information or global positioning system (GPS). Further added value will be associated with the application of common standards. CroBIT is ready for customisation and trials are being undertaken with dedicated trains on two corridors between Italy and Finland and between Portugal and Spain.
