The journey of ballastless track
When the new high speed railway line from Nueremberg to Ingolstadt is opened, more than 800km of ballastless track will be in operation in Germany. The advantages of ballastless track are outlined: excellent riding quality, increased resistance against excessive forces, the use of eddy current brakes is possible, no problems with ballast churning at high speed, an increased average distance of crossovers, no problems with vegetation control, reduction of structure height, increased service life and reduced maintenance. The development of concrete slab track and its early use in Germany are described. Resilient fastening systems, sleeper panels fixed by anchors to the pavement or embedded monolithically, the construction of accurately paved concrete slabs, pre-cast slabs and frames, and the performance, deflection and behaviour of concrete slab tracks are discussed.
