Merging crowds cause Mecca bridge crush
This article outlines the cause of a fatal crowd crush at the twin-deck Jamarat bridge in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, in January 2006. Three factors have been identified: many of the pilgrims for the annual Hajj religious festival were carrying luggage; all the pilgrims were arriving at once for a ceremony; and a bottleneck occurred at the start of the eastern access ramp. The existing structure is being demolished and a new four-tier bridge with twelve access points is to be constructed, with completion expected within two years.
