Urban Warrior
This article discusses how autonomous land vehicles may find possible applications in civilian use. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) Grand Challenge course brings together the military, automotive industry, academia, and R&D to demonstrate the capabilities of autonomous vehicle navigation. The article relates that the 2007 Grand Challenge calls for vehicles to carry out a simulated military supply mission in a mock urban area. Efforts by Volkswagen of America (VWA) directed at designing an autonomous vehicle capable of navigating freeways and urban city streets are described. The need for an artificial intelligence-based approach, with vehicles learning from sensors and sensors learning from each other, is discussed. The article also offers a look ahead at how autonomous vehicles might change the urban landscape.
