Playing It Smart with Smartcards
This article looks ath the growing use of electronic fare collection systems in transit operations. Making use of the term "smart card", transit operators are attracting attention with names such as "TransLink" in San Francisco, "SmarTrip" in Washington, D.C., "Charlie" in Boston, or "Breeze" in Atlanta, while Hong Kong uses "Octopus" for its multi-linked system, and London has its "Oyster" program. The article in particular presents a comparison of the approaches used in Washington, D.C., and London. SmarTrip, considered to be the first contactless smartcard to be used systemwide in any U.S. city, and London's Oyster card, which is now operational on all of London Bus and London Underground. The article also notes that agencies are working together by forming collective agreements and contracting with service provider.
