Discussion of "Field Performance and Analysis of Large-Diameter High-Density Polyethylene Pipe Under Deep Soil Fill" by S. M. Sargand, T. Masada, B. Tarawneh, and D. Gruver (With Closure)
A discussion of the aforementioned article, published in this journal (Volume 131, No. 1, January 2005) is presented. The discusser commends the authors on their case study of the actual performance of plastic pipes, and comments on specific items relating to comparison of field measurements with predictions. The discusser believes that the peaking during initial backfilling is more than the immediate deflection caused by the placement of the backfill. The discusser also requests for additional information concerning the vicinity of the crown during construction. The authors respond with relevant comments, and states that the immediate vertical deflection induced by placement of the backfill above the pipes was more than the vertical deflection that took place during the initial backfilling.
