PAVEMENT CONDITION EVALUATION FOR INTERSTATE 95 IN MAINE
This report describes the methods of obtaining pavement serviceability data using the Mays Ride Meter which operates with a more efficient use of time than the CHLOE Profilometer used previously. Selected sections of I-95 were travered with a special Mays Meter equipped auto. Measurements were taken of distortion (defined as the average deviation, in inches, from a true, "straight crown", based on seven readings, taken to the nearest 0.10 inch at 1-1/2 foot intervals) the transverse, longitudinal and alligator cracks in the pavement, and the number of bumps per mile. Ratings are assigned to the pavement sections, on the basis of these "distress" (distortion and cracks) and "rideability" (bumps) observations, with "weights" assigned to each. The results reported herein are based on only one set of observations, and, hence deterioration rates or trends could not be determined. However, if the rating system is consisently used on an annual basis, it is anticipated that deterioration rate data will improve over time and that, eventually, even the effects of traffic loading and climate variations can be predicted with some reliability.
