Use of PIARC Test Tyres for the Characterisation of Skid Resistance
The PIARC Technical Committee on Surface Characteristics has established new recommendations for evaluating the skid resistance of a road surface. This article begins by reviewing the origin of the PIARC tests, continues with the usage procedures used in various countries, and concludes with a presentation of the most recent recommendations by the committee. Test tires must adhere to two technical specification documents from PIARC detailing the specifications of a standard test tire for a road friction coefficient measurement for both the grooved and smooth tire. An extract of the PIARC technical specifications is provided, presenting a brief highlight of the recommendations for storage and conservation of the tires, and the procedures prior to a new tire being used for friction testing.
