Concrete -- The Sustainable Construction Material: A Nordic Perspective on Technical Opportunities

This article contains an overview of an international conference held in Oslo, Norway by Nordic Network's "Concrete for the Environment" in November 2003 on the status of research and development activities related to environmental issues for concrete. Brief discussions are provided in the areas of: binders, and the fact that in Europe only about 35% of the total cement consumed is pure Portland cement, with that number expected to continue decreasing; creative applications for increasing the service life of a structure by making repairs using carbon fiber-based external reinforcements; and recycled aggregates. Finally, “Concrete for the Environment” has created definitions of sustainable development and criteria for environmentally sustainable concrete structures.
