The Interstate Highway System in Kansas: Saving Lives, Time and Money
On the 50th anniversary of the interstate highway system in the United States, this report examines the history, condition, benefits, use, impacts and future needs of Kansas's interstate highway system. It concludes that the interstate highway system has been of great benefit to Kansas - interstate highway design has improved traffic safety; mobility has improved; and fuel consumption has decreased. Traffic congestion is on the rise, though, and highway improvements in the form of increased capacity would be helpful. In addition, though the bridges and highways are in reasonably good shape considering their age, they will need maintenance work at some point.
