SHIP FIRE DETECTION SYSTEM
The vulnerability of fire detectors aboard ships to temperature, humidity, and airflow extremes increases the incidence of false alarms. Responding to the problem, scientists at the Naval Research Laboratory have developed a prototype of a fire detection system intended for reducing false alarms on ships. The NRL prototype combines two distinct ionization-type detectors, giving it greater detection reliability and sensitivity to a wider particle-size range. In addition, it has the capability to sample the atmosphere surrounding the detectors, and thus to monitor the progress or regress condition of fires on a real-time basis. At the present time, the NRL fire detection system is being evaluated in comparison tests with a wide variety of commercial detectors.
