Thinking Ahead: Continuing Our Look at Italy

This article provides information about the Italian Ministry for Infrastructure and Transport’s current projects. One of the fundamental issues that is currently driving this political body’s development is the recent ten year Euro25.8 billion infrastructure plan authorized by that country’s government, which promises a number of significant improvements to transportation infrastructure specifically. One such project is a multi-billion dollar contract to link Sicily to the Italian mainland called the Strait of Messina Bridge. Two criticisms of the bridge plan include potential environmental impacts as well as potentially illicit construction practices (due to the proximity of illegal organizations to the Sicilian political system). Also briefly discussed in conclusion is the extent of privatization on the Italian roadway network.
