Introducing the Organization of Transport Studies: SWOV- Institute for Road Safety Research in the Netherlands

This article describes the Netherlands’ SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research, noting that this organization established the well-regarded Sustainable Safety approach to traffic safety analysis. The organization, which produces scholarly work on the subject, is also often involved in international efforts for transportation safety research and education. Much of this research is anticipatory, and follows topics such as infrastructure and road crashes, route choice, investment optimization, speed analysis and distribution, and the effects of novice drivers on roadway safety, among other things. SWOV’s Sustainable Safety approach has been used by international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank as a citation for analysis into the prevention of serious crashes and diminish casualty and fatality rates among them.
