A REVIEW AND EVALUATION OF DRAG REDUCTION THEORIES
A survey of the drag reduction literature has been conducted, with a view toward comparing and evaluating various proposed theories or mechanisms which have been postulated in order to explain or describe turbulent drag reduction by polymeric additives. Both molecular and continuum theories have been considered, although none has yet proved adequate for quantitative prediction of drag reduction. Viscoelastic properties sufficient to produce drag reduction are demonstrated. The mutual interaction between viscoelastic rheological properties and the structure of turbulent flows needs to be established before drag reduction can be completely understood or described.
