The motorist's point of view

The AA, Britain's largest motoring organisation, has a role as the independent voice of the motorist. This paper from the AA's Motoring Policy Unit examines parking issues from a motorist's viewpoint. Public perceptions relating to parking are discussed. The AA believes that there is an urgent need to review and change the way controlled zones are signed and that the signing should be uniform. Research has shown a serious problem regarding people's understanding of time plate information. The AA backs the Ten Year Plan for Transport and the need for transport choice to exist. The AA supports the decriminalisation of routine parking offences. It maintains that enforcement in London, UK, is still sometimes not carried out systematically, with wheel clamping and towing away appearing to be undertaken for revenue rather than enforcement reasons. The AA considers that the adjudication system is one of the success stories of the new decriminalised system. The organisation applauds local authorities that are using mobile telephone and internet solutions to improve parking for motorists and authorities alike. For the covering abstract see ITRD E129139.
