US wants to go it alone
This article considers the use of alternative fuels and environmentally-friendly vehicles, mostly in the USA. The focus of current US legislation is to encourage long-term production of domestic energy supplies to reduce dependence on foreign oil imports. Tax incentives are proposed to encourage production of advanced-technology vehicles. Similar proposals exist in the UK and Europe. US vehicles are being produced to run more economically and more alternative-fuel vehicles are being used. However, there remains the challenge of changing public opinion away from the convenience and lower cost of the traditional internal combustion engine. (A)
