TRL launches SafeNET 2 - a new version of the Road Accident Prediction Software

SafeNET 2 is designed to help traffic engineers and transport planners in the design, management and planning of safe road networks. The accident prediction models are based on statistical analysis of data from the UK road network relating personal injury accidents to traffic flow, road layout and signal control variables. SafeNET 2 offers a set of rural accident prediction models in addition to the original urban models. It offers an improved user interface and integration with traffic assignment models such as SATURN and CONTRA, a new improved NETBUILDER graphical interface, and enhanced graphical output. The reasons why accident prediction is important are discussed and the development of the SafeNET system is outlined. SafeNET 2 predicts the number of personal injury accidents that would be expected to occur on a road network within a year. The different accident models within SafeNET 2 include roundabouts and mini roundabouts, traffic signal junctions, T-junctions, crossroads and staggered junctions, single carriageway roads, COBA models, modern rural single and dual carriageway road links, motorway links, speed models and traffic calming measures.
