Casting light on fresh funding

The use of the private-finance initiative (PFI) in the local authority streetlighting sector in the UK is increasing. This article describes the advance of PFI in streetlighting and the different approaches that a local authority can use. The market is tight with relatively few competing contractors. Joint working is popular, as seen on the Newcastle City Council and North Tyneside Council's scheme. Funding and PFI are discussed in relation to the technical challenges: designing, commissioning, new technology, electricity procurement, and the integration of streetlighting with other street works.
